John Course

Having been part of the house music since its emergence in Australia, John first came to prominence by winning the Victorian leg of the DMC turntablist competition…A feat he repeated two years in a row!!! Moving from turntablist roots, he embraced house music from the start & was listed in DJ Mag’s first ever Top 100 DJ’s list, going on to start a successful label, produce original music, have a nation-wide dance music radio show in Australia & recently, hosting his own webcast during the Covid-19 isolation period…

One of the founders of Vicious Recordings (Est. 1992), John is the GM of the label collective that first signed artists such as Madison Avenue, Rogue Traders, Peking Duk, Dirty South, a bunch of Avicii’s first ever recordings & many more tracks from DJ’s & producers from all over the world. Over 500 releases deep, Vicious continues to release a stack of music, both on its original Vicious label as well as imprints Vicious Bitch & Vicious Black. Since 2017 the company also added Australian labels U-Genius Music & Valiant Records to the collective, with a partnership that helps these newer labels benefit from the company’s extensive experience while allowing complete freedom with their A&R direction.

On a DJ front, there are over one million compilation sales that include a John Course mix CD! Previously co-hosting a national radio show in his home country Australia for many years (Novanation for over 7 years on the Nova Network every Saturday night), in March 2020 John started his webcast, Club Classics and Future Anthems. The weekly broadcasts have proved to be one of the most popular DJ shows during the Covid-19 isolation period in Australia throughout 2020 and has carried on through 2021’s multiple lockdown periods in Australia. Over 60 shows, half a million plus views and a quarter of a million chat messages only reinforce the impact the Facebook and Twitch broadcast had during lockdowns.

Between all of the above, John also gets the urge to produce music, having been part of Blackout (who’s “Gottta Have Hope” was a huge club record globally in the late 90’s), as half of Electro Funk Lovers & with solo productions under his alias J.A.C. or simply as John Course where he first remixed for Defected Records on a remix of King Unique’s now classic “Love Is What You Need” with Andy Van way back in 2000. His most recent remixes have been The Fog’s classic and Sgt Slick’s “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!”. John’s latest productions include a house music cover of Liberty X’s R&B hit “Just A Little”, follow up single with Sgt Slick “Love Is” and latest “Love Vision” due at the end of 2021, all released on his own Vicious Recordings label, not to mention a cracking new remix for Sgt Slick’s Gold accredited single “Gimme Gimme Gimme” which dropped in December 2021 to keep the heat on Slicks massive now nearly two year old release.

\John continues to involve himself in the dance music community. He is on ARIA’s Club Music Advisory Group, was one of the judges for APRA’s Professional Development Awards in 2021 and regularly contributes his extensive music business experience to online blogs and YouTube channels.

In the age of the bedroom & promoter DJ, John’s technical skills are only surpassed by his experience in programming the right music for the crowd in front of him and his deep knowledge of dance music’s back catalogue… Be it digging through classics or dropping fresh new sounds, John’s love of dance music not only helps keep Vicious on track, but ensures his productions are on point and that he is still in demand as a DJ several decades after those two DMC titles.
