| NICK DEM Q: TEXTURED BEATS
Once upon a time, the concept of a ‘Tech-House’ genre was something of a contradiction. Quite often, purist Techno purveyors argued that any track infused with the flavours of a traditional house sound, lets say hints of a sexy vocal layered over four-four beats as an example, could hardly stand up to the adrenalin engaged energy inherent in a typical hands-in-the-air banging anthem. The converse of all this of course, was the soft-core House fan whose idea of kicking bass started and stopped somewhere around the Logic default mark of 120 BPM….
That was until Melbourne DJ, producer, and Bamboo Music co-founder Nick Dem Q released the first track off his own, now seminal, record label. Entitled ‘Bomba’ the track came as a surprise to both sides of the category specific masses. Showing influences of the lush percussion most often reserved for Spanish house, mixed with a disparately thumping techno bass line, ‘Bomba’ quickly became the standard in the new sound which these days, is most commonly refereed to as Tribal, AKA –
Tech-House…
Bomba was quickly picked up on play lists by a diverse group of international DJs and producers, including Murray Richardson, X-press 2, Trendroid and Saeed&Palash. Several outstanding reviews in UK dance bible’s ‘DJ’ and ‘7’ soon followed and the eclectic Bamboo sound was born.
Two years on and Nick Dem Q’s unique tech-house sounds have continued to carve a loyal following from both DJs and dance floors alike. Having toured most of the key cities of the Asian Pacific region, including sell-out club dates at Park97 in Shanghi, The Club in Bejing and super club Zouk in Singapore, it is not just Demq’s production work, but also his headlining sexy tribal house sets that have helped raise his profile as a pioneer of this often under-represented, but always killer sound.
Created upon the foundations of accessibility, Dem Q continues to have the unique ability to create music that is written for the dance floor, yet never compromises the integrity of the sound. Ever soulful, Dem Q is a now recognised as a producer capable of humanising electronic beats, using an undefinable – almost rhetorical method of production, which somehow layers up a pared-back sound. The breadth and calibre of artist’s now deploying his tracks on compilation albums from all over the world, coupled with a #4 spot on the ARIA club chart, not too mention an already acclaimed debut album, stand as testimony to this man’s rare talent.
