Hailing from Melbourne Australia, Mark John is one of Australia's most
respected and revered disc jockeys who has built a reputation based on
his world class productions and dj sets throughout many local and
International clubs, events and festivals of high repute over the past 8
years.
With his inspiration emanating from elements of disco, street soul,
jazz, funk and hip hop to the diverse range of world Music, Mark emerges
from the depths of musical soul to unearth the rhythm that is House
Music. Citing his influences from musical supremos such as George
Benson, The Jacksons, Quincy Jones, George Duke, Malcolm Mclaren and LL
Cool J to contemporary masters such as Incognito and Masters at Work.
Exhibiting a unique style of soulful house and garage through a maze of
wild percussion and deep funk, Marks status has been heightened by the
combination of inspired and energetic sets together with live
instruments, percussionists and vocal performances. Apart from
headlining Australia's premiere clubs and dance parties / festivals,
Mark has performed at many of the worlds top venues including Pascia
(Italy), D! Club (Switzerland), Club Qoo (Japan), Centro 360
(Singapore), Opium Gardens (Miami), Neuvo (Kuala Lumpur). In addition,
he has supported International acts all over the world such as Masters
at Work, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, Lenny Fontana, Joey Negro,
Brian Tappert, Knee Deep, E - Smoove, Bob Sinclar, Dimitri from Paris,
Steve "Silk" Hurley and Danny Tenaglia.
Abiding by a philosophy where house music has no rules, Mark pushes the
boundaries through infectious sessions incorporating Nu Jazz, Future
Soul and Latin / Afro abstract excursions mixed seamlessly with the
grittiest of house and garage. No doubt his style derives from the fact
that Melbourne is a city which embraces varied cultures from around the
world; one which offers instant access to an abundance of music styles
and sub genres.
In addition to flexing his DJ muscle, Mark has been diligently involved
with the production side of music, skilfully creating his own brand of
sound in the studio over the past few years. His initial "In the Fire
EP" released mid 2001 was received enthusiastically, achieving a rating
of 5 stars in Blues and Soul magazine and heavy radio play from Paris to
Chicago. Current productions see Mark writing, producing and remixing
alongside Disco Montego, a forthcoming single on Vicious Vinyl, remixing
duties on several local labels and the soon to be released "URBAN
SPIRIT" project which combines the very best in Australian urban
vocalists with a groove house flavour. Other current productions see
Mark and Danny Dharumasena take the helm as MDs of "QUASIMODO" a fifteen piece stage show that has to be seen to be believed incorporating
turntablism, dancers, rappers, percussion, horns, bass, guitars and keys
in an all out blend of "total genre defying theatre."
